LOCAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
—. + The first meeting of the newlyelected School Committee was held in the State School last evening; present Messrs Seddon, Voysey, Burger, Campbell, Jamieson, and Olden ; absentMr Williamson.
Mr Seddon was unanimously elected Chairman.
On taking the chair, Mr Seddon said he anticipated that he would only hold the position for a very shott time on this occasion. He was very mnch grieved and disappointed at what had occurred at the election last evening anent the ballot papers. He thought the course most consistent with honour and good taste would be for the Committee to advise the Board to declare the election void, and order a fresh election. He would therefore move "That owing to more ballot papers being returned than the scrutineers at the election last evening vouch for as correct, the Committee are of opinion that, in the interest of Education, it is desirable that a fresh election be held." Mr Burger seconded the motion. He quite concurred with the views taken by the Chiirman, and the only way to restore confidence was to have a fresh election. The Committee were the proper persons to initiate the movement to have a fresh election.
Mr Voysey was strongly in favour of having the election over again. Next time more persons would be present, and steps would be taken to prevent any mistakes occurring. He did not wish to hold a seat on the Committee unless fairly elected. The motion was then put and carried unanimously. On the motion of Mr Voysey, seconded by Mr Olden, the Chairman was requested to procure a supply of firewood. It was resolved that the Borough Council be asked for the use of the Town Hall for future meetings of the School Committee. The meeting then adjourned.
