The annual meeting of householders of the Pomiamu School District was held in the school-room, Greenstone, on Tuesday last, at 8 p.m. ; Mr Dwyer in the chair. After a full report of the proceedings of the outgoing committee was read, the electors proceeded with the nomination of candidates willing to act on the new committee, which resulted in the following gentleman being nominated :—Messrs M. Dwyer, J. Nicholas, E. Loiighnan, W. Whitten, W. Morgan, J. Kelly, and T. Rowe. The number of nominations not exceeding the number of vacancies, the Chairman declared the above seven persons duly elected members of the new committee. The Pounamu district includes Greenstone, Westbrook, and the new settlement schools.
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council will be held in the Town Hall this evening.
The Miners' Ball takes place to-morrow evening, and promises to be as great a success as on previous occasions, a lame number of tickets having been disposed of.
lii consequences of the absence of Mr Speuce, the County Council will hold a special luuoLiiiy on Monday evening next, the 3rd 3ray, at half-past seven, to appoint a member of the Finance Committee in his place, and also to authorise some councillor to sign cheques in his absence. In consequence 'of his being away, the cheques passed at the last meeting of the Council are not yet paid, and cannot be paid until the meeting takes place. Another T boat belonging to the Union Company has been in danger. The Taupo went ashore on Tuesday, at 11.30 p.m., on some rocks two and a-half miles to the
eastward of Gisborne. After discharging about 100 tons of cargo, the Taupo floated aud steamed up to an anchorage. W. J. M'llroy and Co., Main street, Kumara, beg to announce that they are purchasers of gold.—[Advt.] The demand for the great American remedy, Hop Bitters, in this part of the world has become so great that the Hop Bitters Co., whose headquarters are at Rochester, New York, U.S., A., have been compelled to open a laboratory in Melbourne. It is in charge of Mr M. H. Yan Bergh, a gentleman of several years' experience with this Company, and the trade may be assured of receiving goods equal to the parent house, and the most courteous treatment. The H. B. Co. have establishments at London, Paris, Antwerp, Belgium, Breda, Holland and Toronto, and their American Bitters are probably the best known medicine in the world.
