April 23. Tenders are invited on behalf of the Government of South Australia for a loan of £1,330,000 at four per cent.

The minimum has been fixed at £99. The tenders will be opened on the 30fch inst.

Sir Andrew Clarke, acting AgentGeneral for the colouy of Victoria" has received a despatch from Earl Granville, Secretary of State for the Colonies, confirming the previous declaration that France has deferred taking any action regarding the New Hebrides until replies have been received to the telegrams addressed by the Colonial Office to the various Colonial Governments, asking them for their views on the matter. Earl Granville aho stated that the Governments in question had been requested to furnish their replies before the end of April. Earl Granville has received an answer from the Hon. Mr Gillies, Premier of Victoria, which confirms his adherence to the views propounded in the telegram already sent by Mr Griffiths, Premier of Queensland, which stated that the federated colonies strongly objected to any alterations in the status quo in regard to the New Hebrides.

A desperate attempt has been made by rebels in Burniah to destroy the town of Mandahiy by fire. Fortunately the British garrison had sufficient warning to prevent the attempt proving successful. The Orient Company will tender for the carrying of the mails under the new federal service. The third of the series of wool sales will commence on June 16th. The New Zealand Shipping Company, Limited, has received the following telegram from its London office, dated 20th April, 1886 :—" R.M.S. Tongariro arrived all well at Plymouth, 2 a.m. to-day; meat in good condition.
