Owing to the continued moistness of the atmosphere and the showers of rain which fell yesterday and lightly this morning, the Recreation Ground continued in
totally unfit state for holding sports in of any kind this after oon. The booths and the gallery for the Bund have been erected *H tlie flwi ty K arcing laid, jßut a*
for running, jumping, or vaulting, that would be highly injudicious if not dangerous to the contestants, for the ground is not even fit to walk upon. The Fete Committee have therefore postponed the out-door sports until to-morrow, at the same hour. The concert and ball will, however, take place this evening, as announced, and we hope to see the Theatre Royal well filled to-night on the occasion of the annual festival for the benefit of our local Hospital. The following are the entries and handicap for the principal foot race to-morrow :
simens were the handicappers. A large number of persons have taken their departure by coaches, regular and special, for the Hokitika races, which are to be run to-day and to-morrow. The Waipara took 40 passengers from Greymouth yesterday morning. The Christchurch coach arrived on Saturday, at about 9.30 p.m. Among the passengers was Mr H. R. Rae, County Clerk, who has been on an excursion to Australia for the benefit of his health, which we are happy to state is much improved, the changes of climate having done him much good. The School Committee election takes place to-morrow evening, at the State School, at 8 o'clock sharp. Owing to a clause in the new Act which alters the day of election from the last Monday in January to the last Monday in April, the present committee have now been in office fifteen months. There have been seventeen meetings during this period. The names of Committee, and their attendances are as follow : Meetings. Campbell, A. C 17 Jamieson, T. 17 Voysey, G 16 Barrowman, F 14 Burger, H 12 Seddon,.R. J io Williamson, A. J 10 The Borough Council will hold a special sitting in the Town Hall, on Thursday evening next, to hear and determine all claims and objections to the Burgess List. MrR. J. Seddon, M.H.R., addressed a meeting of his constituents at Stafford Town on Saturday evening last. There was a large attendance. Mr Ambrose Crebar was called upon to preside. After the address Mr J. F. Byrne made eulogistic references to various actions of Mr Seddon during the last session of the Assembly and concluded by moving a vote of thanks to and confidence in Mr Seddon. The motion was seconded by Mr Robert Davidson, and carried unanimously.
Mr A. R. Guinness addressed his constituents at Greenstone on Wednesday evening, and at Westbrooke on Thursday ; and at both places received a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence.
The monthly-inspection of the Kumara Rifles is appointed to take place on Thursday next, the 29th inst., at the Adelphi Hall, at 8 p.m.
On Thursday next, at 12.30 p.m., Messrs R. W. Wade and Co., under instructions from the Public Works Department, will sell by public auction, at the Teremakau River, the punt lately used on the river, with all the wire rope, blocks, traveller, shed, &c.
