off, and lodged in Lane's groin. He ■was put. in a trap, which started for the Blenheim Hospital, but he died when seveu miles on the road. An inquest will he held. Deceased was 30 yea is of age, and leaves a wife and two young children. CHMSTCHUItCH, April 19. Yesterday afternoon Hayward's drag in going to Sumner, npset near Shag Poiut. while endeavouring to pass another drag driven by Burns, who, it is stated, tried to prevent Hay ward from passing. Hayward's thigh and arm were broken. He also received other injuries and is in a critical condition. Three passengers were injured, but not seriously. At the Diverce Court to-day Mr Justice Johnston granted a decree nisi in Simpson v. Simpson. It is in contemplation to hold a grand demonstration in Hagley Park to celebrate the receipt of the news re the West Coast Kail way. Mr C. C. Boweri, chairman of the guarantors, has cabled Home to Mr Allan Scott for details of the contract made with the Syndicate. Wellington, April 19. The Taiaroa disaster was specially alluded to in several of the local churches yesterday. A quantity of passengers' luggage has been saved from the wreck, and brought on here. The Taiaroa's cargo was auctioned today, and sold to Messrs Matson and Rankin, of Blenheim, for .£3O. The body of a man named Joseph Young was found below high water mark this morning. He. had been drinking heavily of late. Auckland, April 17. The champion whale boat race for £2OO a-side, Waitemate versus Hauraki, took place this afternoon, and was witnessed by 10,000 persons. The, Governor was present. It was well contested about half way home, when a foul took place. Hauraki won by several lengths. The Waitemate's protest of deliberate fouling was disallowed by the umpire. A good deal of money changed hands. William Robert Doyle was poisoned by taking carbolic acid as a sleeping draught. He had been drinking. The body of Johanna Benniug, wife of a slaughterman, was found floating in the harbour this morning. She had been in a desponding state of mind for some days, the cause being her arrest for the theft of an adopted daughter. Last night she threatened to drown herself. At the inquest, the verdict was "found drowned without marks of violence." Latterly she had been showing signs of derangement.
