A sad misfortune, we regret to state, befel Miss Alice Rugg yesterday evening, by which she sustained a broken leg. In company with several other ladies she went to attend the Skating Club at the Theatre Royal, and, after a little practice with roller-skates, she took rest in a standing attitude against the wall. Whilst in this position, with her legs crossed, the left leg, on which the body was mainly supported, slipped from under her, and she fell heavily to the floor. Miss Rugg at once felt convinced that her leg was broken, and in consequence Mr Evison was sent for, and had her removed to her home. He found that the tibia was fractured at the lower third, and the fibula dislocated. He at once set the injured and dislocated bones, and, with the help of Mr Ross, the Hospital Wardsraan, who kindly came to his assistance, bandaged the leg. The patient suffered great pain, during the whole night, but was improving when the doctor visited her to-day. The old adage that "misfortunes never come singly " was verified by this sad accident. In the morning of yesterday, Mr Jas. Rugg, the father, had the tips of the two forefingers of his left hand nearly severed by a heavy stone falling upon them.
Professor Black, accompanied by his metallurgical assistant Mr Fenton, arrived by the midday coach from Hokitika. They visited the Lead this afternoon .with Mr W. Morris. The Professor will give one of his interesting lectures, at the Towu Hall at eight o'clock this evening. The admission is free. All miners are earnestly requested to attend.
Mr Clarke, the Westland County Chairman, drove the Minister of Mines to Greymouth yesterday afternoon. His Worship the Mayor also accompanied him, with Messrs W. Morris, Mansfield, and P. Chambers. The party arrived at Greymouth at about 7.30 p.m. The full County Council of Grey interviewed the Minister during the evening, at Gilmer's Hotel, with an address of welcome, and the County Chairman brought under his notice a number of very necessary county works.
In our report yesterday of the visit of the Minister of Mines to Kumara, we omitted to mention as amongst those who accompanied the Minister from Hokitika to this town, the name of Mr P. Dungan, M.C.C.
