A criminal information has been laid against Lyal], manager of the branch of the Commercial Bank of South Australia, Yankalilla, for embezzlement. It is believed that the. alleged irregularities are in some way connected with the robbery which took place at the bank on the 6th of March. (Received March 29, 12.45 p.m.) Sydney, March 19. A pastoral letter emanating from the Plenary Council dealing with the question of mixed marriages and secular education was read yesterday in all the Roman Catholic churches in the Sydney diocese. [Per Tarawera at Auckland.] Melbourne, March 18. P. O'Brien, of Hawthorn, has given £IOOO towards clearing off (he debt from St. Patrick's Cathedral. Nearly £SOOO was received for the relief of sufferers by the Heylesbury forest bush fire. Sydney, March 18. In political circles everything is quiet just now. The Govenment are preparing their measures for Parliament. The unemployed agitation has caused some trouble, but most of the men have now been provided for on relief works around the metropolis. The Government have decided to stop immigration from home for this year. At last St. Patrick's Day celebration, held yesterday, two resolutions were passed, one congratulating Mr Parnell on the glorious victory he had achieved, and the other pledging the liishmen of New South Wales to contribute toward? the payment of the Irish members in the House of Commons.
The policy of the Government, as foreshadowed by the Minister of Works last night, will include retrenchment in the Public and the Civil services, the reduction of the military vote, the suspension of immigration, an amendment of the Land Act, and direct and indirect taxation.
Lady Forbes, widow of the first Chief Jnstice of the colony, died recently, aged ninety-one.
