[united press association.] Nelson, August 12. Harmer, son of Mr Harmer, of Maitai, went pigeon shooting. He was missed and was afterwards found dead with a gun shot wound in the head. It is believed that the gun caught in the scrub. Two children of Robt. Henderson, of Mercury Bay, were poisoned through eating tutu. One of five years old is dead, and one of three years is in a precarious condition. A movement has been commenced for a tramway system at the North Shore. Dunedin, August 13. A young man named James O'Connor, who was arrested for passing valueless cheques, made an attempt to commit suicide while in the lock-up by taking chlorodyne, but was noticed by a detective who knocked the bottle out of his hands. A foreman of a jam factory was fined for branding a lad under him with a branding irou. He held the iron under the boy's chin, and burnt him rather severely, but, repenting, he offered the lad the branding iron to suffer him to retaliate. Auckland, August 10. Through the capsizing of a boat on the Waruroto river, John Cox, settler, Churchill, was drowned. Cecil A. Caspar was committed on two charges of fraudulent embezzlement. The Rev. M'Kenzie Eraser, who died, was brother-n-law of the late Hugh Miller, the eminent geologist. August 12. A child named Hare died from poisoning at, Ofahuhu this morning. Matches were found in the bed with heads sucked off.
