PROVINCIAL NEWS.
♦ [united press association.! Wellington, August 9. The Exhibition was crowded all yesterday and last night. About 3000 were present to hear the Oamaru Band, which is the first competitor for the band contest. Their playing was much admired, and loudly applauded. After the Exhibition had been open for a couple of hours in the evening it was found necessary to refuse further admission, and hundreds were turned away. A project is on foot to open the Exhibition every night. Dunedin, August 10. The 12 hours' walking match between Hancock and Scott took place today. The pace was fast, as shown by 50 miles being covered in less time than in the match for that distance. Neither of the men left the track at all, and no greater distance than a quarter of a lap has separated them, Scott always leading a pace or two. At 10.20, Scott put on a spurt, but Hancock responded ten minutes afterwards; but he was hooted for his style of walking; at 10.45 the distance was 70 miles 8 laps, both together, with only 15 minutes to go. Later. Scott eventually won the match by a yard, having covered 72 miles 8 laps.
