> < [REUTERS TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. DEPARTURE OE HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR NEW GUINEA. THE MELBOURNE OMNIBUS DRIVERS’ STRIKE. THE COLONIAL EXHIBITION IN LONDON. INSUBORDINATION OF VICTORIA ARTILLERY-MEN. SENTENCES ON THE ACCUSED. (Received August 4, 1.30 p.m.) Sydney, August 4. Sir Peter Scratchley leaves this week for New Guinea in order to enter upon his duties as High Commissioner for the protected districts of that territory. Arrived, yesterday afternoon, the Union Company’s steamship Tarawera, from New Zealand. Melbourne, August 4. The Omnibus drivers’ strike still continues. They had an interview yesterday with Mr Clapp, manager of the company, but without anything definite transpiring. A large number of applications from all parts of Victoria for space in the Colonial Exhibition to be held next year in London are being received by the Victorian Commissioners. (Received August 5, 1 p.m.) August 5. The question of sentences recently passed upon members of the Victoria Permanent Artillery force came under discussion in tbe Legislative Assembly last night. A lengthy debate of a somewhat desultory character took place, but the House declined to interfere with the action of the military authorities. No arrangements are come to between the omnibus drivers and the company, and tbe prospect of an amicable settlement appears very remote.
