According to the London Times, her Majesty the Queen has declined to accept the resignation of Mr Gladstone and his colleagues without being furnished with further reasons for their retirement than their defeat on the question of raising the duty on beer and spirits. The Greymouth and Westport Harbour loans have both been successfully floated, as will be seen by cable messages this afternoon. Mr Seddon addressed the electors at the Theatre Royal last evening. There was but a moderate attendance, a full report of his speech at Dillman’s Town having been published by us on the previous evening. Urgent telegrams received yesterday in Auckland by Mr Sheehan’s relations hold out no hopes of his recovery. His sister left for Napier yesterday. Commander Edwin wired this afternoon —“ Every indication of heavy frost to-night.” The Christchurch coach arrived this afternoon, bringing East Coast, Australian, and Suez mails. The adjourned meeting of the Licensing Committee for the granting of licenses or renewals of licenses within the Borough of Kumara will be held in the Court House, at noon on Monday next, the 15th inst. A painful accident happened on Thursday morning to a boy, the eldest son of Mr Jago, Chief Postmaster, Hokitika. The Times says “It appears that the boys at the State School were playing football when young Jago slipped and fractured his thigh-bone. The break was a diagonal one, and consequently more troublesome to set. The little sufferer is getting on as well as can be expected. ” The Ahaura correspondent of the Grey River Argus telegraphed yesterday : “ A report is current that another Chinaman has been drowned. He has been missing from the Big River district for the last few days.” Harris, one of the men missing up at Wairarapa Lake, Wellington district, has been discovered all right. There are no signs yet of Liardet. The tenders advertised last evening for the erection of fluming at Ross Terrace, are to be separate—l, for erection of fluming (labour only), and 2, for the supply and delivery of 80 legs, at the Government race. Plans and specifications may be seen at Mr D. Hannan’s, to whom the tenders are to be sent, addressed to Lee and party, by 7 p.m. on the 19th inst. At the Preston Yards, Greymouth, on Monday next, Messrs Girdwood, Lahman and Co. will sell a lot of grand quality bullocks, prime wethers, and (if the steamer be up to time) ten pigs. Vance Klaus Hassalaer is now selling by auction a large stock of Groceries, Drapery, of every description, Wheat and Flour ; which must be sold by June 20th. Special Notice to Miners. —Vance Klaus Hasselaer has two tons of dynamite, caps, and fuses coming, which will be offered at 20 per cent below wholesale cost.—The above must be sold out quickly, as Vance Klaus Hasselaer will be leaving again in a few days.— [Advx.] Malarial Fever.
