THE AFGHAN FRONTIER. ADVANCE OF THE RUSSIANS IN AFGHANISTAN. OCCUPATION OF MERUTCHAK BY THE RUSSIANS. ACCEPTANCE OF SERVICE OF AUSTRALIAN CONTINGENT. ADVANCE OF THE RUSSIANS CONFIRMED BY LUMSDEN. (Received April 30, 0.45 a.m.) London, April 29. The Standard this morning publishes a telegram from its special correspondent with General Lumsden to the effect that the Russian troops have occupied Merutchak, a position on the river Murghab, twenty miles south of Penjdeh. No details, however, are given with regard to the occurrence. (Received April 29, 9.30 p.m.)
It is officially announced that the offer made by the New South Wales Government of the Colonial Soudan Contingent for service in India has been accepted. (Received April 30, 11. a.m.) Evening. In the House of Commons last night Lord Edmond Fitzmaurice, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, announced that Government had received a telegram from Sir P. S. Lumsden, dated Sunday, April 26, in which he stated that the Russian troops were advancing in the valley of Murghab, and had occupied Merutchak.
