PROVINCIAL NEWS.
[united press association.] Dunedin, Agril 9. Alexander Fleming was acquitted of child-beating: In sentencing Carrie Fleming, his Honor said to the prisoner, "I am unable to agree with the suggestion of your counsel that in flogging these poor children you acted from an error of judgment only. On the contrary, it seems to me from the depositions and what I have heard to-day that your conduct evinces you were actuated by a cruel mind, and it is fortunate that charitable neighbours interfered and tried to stop your proceedings. There is no doubt that the boy and little girl received gross ill-treatment at your hands, ill-treatment which appears to me to be altogether without justification. Standing in the position which you do to them it was your special duty to treat them with kindness. The prisoner, who. was greatly affected, was then sentenced to two years' imprisonment, Mr William Millschamp, an old and respected Dunedin resident, who has lately been carrying on business as a saw-maker in George street, died very suddenly in the southern express between Waihola and Mosgiel, on Tuesday evening. Auckland, April 8. Col. Lyons notifies that all Volunteer companies will require to be made up at the full strength (63). At present some are only 40.
