THE TAIPO RACES.
There was a very good gathering at the Taipo Races on Easter Monday, as may be inferred from the fact that 26 horses were entered for the various events. The races were held in a paddock at Inchbonnie belonging to Mr Bruce, and kindly lent for the occasion. It is about three miles off the Christchurch road, near the Taipo Crossing. Many settlers were present with their wives and families, and there were some forty to fifty equestrians. Mr MTnerney, of the Taipo Hotel, provided refreshments in a most liberal manner, and piloted the visitors over the river to the race ground. The following are the results of the various r.icing events : First Race, for a Saddle.—One mile and a half. Mr. W. Green’s Alice Grey ... 1 Mr F. George’s Polly ... ... 2 Eighteen horses started. Second Race,—First Prize, £5 ; second, £2 10s; third, £1 10s,—One mile. Mr W. Jackson’s Half Caste ... 1 Mr F. George’s Polly ... ... 2 Mr J. Taylor’s grey mare 3 Third Race.—First prize, £5 ; second, £2 10s; third, £1 10s.'—One mile. Mr Jackson’s Half Caste 1 Mr F. George’s Polly ... ... 2 Mr J. Taylor’s grey mare ... ... 3 Girls Race ; feminine riders.—First prize, £5 ; second, £2 10s; third, £1 10s.—One mile. Miss Wade... ... ... ... Miss Haylock ... ... ... 2 Mias Jackson ... ... ... 3 There were sports and biscuits and lollies for the children ; and the meeting, which was the first of the kind ever held on the Christchurch road, proved most successful. One young man fell with his horse, and was stunned for awhile, but it is hoped his visit to the doctor last evening will be the means of his resuming his occupation in a very short time. It wil be observed by an advertisement elsewhere that it is intended to hold another race meeting on the Christchurch road, and a preliminary meeting of gentlemen favourable to the project will be held at Mr Haylock’s Hotel, at Kawhaka, next Wednesday evening, the 15th inst.
THE BAD AND WORTHLESS Are never imitated or counterfeited. This is especially true of a family medicine, and it is positive proof that the remedy imitated is of the highest value. As soon as it had been tested and proved by the whole world that Hop Bitters was the purest, best and the most valuable family medicine on earth, many imitations sprung up and began to steal the notices in which the press and the people of the country had expressed the merits of H. 8., and in every way trying to induce suffering invalids to use their stuff instead, expecting to make money and credit on the good name of H. B. Many others started nostrums put up in similar style to H. 8., with variously devised names in which the word “Hop” or “Hops” were used in a way tn induce people to believe they were the same as Hop Bitters. All such pretended remedies or cures, no matter what their style or name is, and especially those with the word “ Hop or “ Hops ’ in their name or in any way connected with them.' or ;their
name, are imitations or counterfeits. Beware of them. Touch none of them. Use nothing but genuine American Hop Bitters, with a bunch or cluster of green Hops on the white label, and Dr. Soule’s name blown in the glass. Trust nothing else. Druggists and Chemists are warned against dealing in imitations or counterfeits. Highway Robbery Almost, to sell the poisonous, drunken, purging stuff as medicine to honest men, innocent women, and harmless children to weaken and destroy their systems and health, when pure harmless Hop Bitters can be had that cures always and continually at a trifling cost. Ask druggists or phsicians. Read.
