The Daily News to-day states that official despatches received from St. Petersburg strengthen the hopes of an amicable settlement being arrived at between England and Russia on the Afghan frontier question. The following vessels will form the German squadron in the Pacific :—The Slosch, Marie, Albatross, and Hyseue. They will be under the command of Commodore Pascher, March 4. General Grover Cleveland was installed as President of the United States to-day. The German annexation of the territory adjacent to Zanzibar ousts the Glasgow Colonising Company, who previously occupied it. A new Governor has been appointed to succeed Lord Augustus Loftus as Governor of New South Wales. It is, understood that he occupies a high position, and is wealthy. A hundred and eighty thousand salmon ova are to be shipped for New Zealand by the Shaw Savill and Albion Company’s steamer Arawa. A large sum has been offered at home towards the patriotic fund. The German Government intend to colonise that portion of New Guinea recently annexed by them. The cargo of frozen meat by the steamer Arawa is in splendid condition. Should any of Murdoch’s cricketing team visit England next year they will be excluded from Lord’s and the Oval grounds, and probably from Nottingham. March 5. Count Herbert Bismarck, Acting Under-Secretary of State, is parleying with Lord Granville. It is proposed to increase the English army by 15,000 men. The Very Rev. Canon Walsh, D.D., President of Maynooth College, will succeed the late Archbishop MacCabe as Archbishop of Dublin.
