ALL LIVES SAVED. STEAMER SENT TO ASSISTANCE. THE SORTIE FROM SOUAKIM AND BURNING OF HANDOUB. ITALIAN EXPEDITION FOR MASSOWAH. ALLIANCE OF ITALY WITH ENGLAND. (Received February 6, 11 a.m.) London, February 5. A telegram is to hand from General Wolseley stating that the Mahdi has captured Khartoum, through l the treachery of Gordon's followers, and Gordon is probably a prisoner. Later. Further intelligence is received showing that Khartoum fell on the 26th January. Sir Charles Wilson, with a detachment of the Royal Sussex Regiment, arrived at Khartoum by a steamer from Metemneh on the 28th, and found the city occupied by the enemy, and he forthwith returned, but under a heavy fire from the river banks. The steamer afterwards became wrecked below Shabulki cataract. All on board were saved and landed on an island, from which ti steamer lias been sent to rescue them.
(Received February 6, 1 a.m.) Cairo, February i. Colonel Freemantle, commanding the troops at Sonakim, telegraphs to headquarters that the officer in command of the force of Hussars and Egyptians which made the recent sortie upon and burnt Handoub exceeded his instructions. Home, February 4. The second Italian expedition destined for Massowah, in the Red Sen, will leave Naples on Sunday next. London, February 5. It is stated that an agreement has been concluded between the British and Italian Governments under which Italy will help England to establish a Government in Soudan, and will occupy Massowah and perhaps Souakim.
