Waddington, French Minister in London, has presented counter proposals by the French Government for the settlement of Egyptian finances to Earl Granville. The proposals comprise a loan of 9,000,000 sterling, issued under a guarantee of the Great Powers, a tax on all coupons of Egyptian bonds, and the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry into the resources of Egypt. The refusal of the Victorian Government to accept the offer of 19s in the £ from the liquidators of the Oriental Bank estate has been brought before the courts, and Justice Chi tty gave judgment in the matter to-day, deciding that the colonial statutes do not affect the claim of the Victorian Government upon the estate. The Court of Appeal has confirmed the sentence of four months’ imprisonment passed in April last upon Edmund Yates, proprietor of the World newspaper, for the libel of Lord Lonsdale.
