BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall on Saturday, the 10th inst. - } present—His Worship the Mayor (U. Burger, Esq.), Councillors Anderson, Ziegler, Fitzsimons, Campbell, Maloney, and Nicholson. Mr Olden made the usual formal declaration, and took his seat as a councillor. The outward correspondence was read and approved of, and the inward received and considered. A letter from Mr Close, Secretary to the Five Brigade, applying for the annual subsidy, was referred to the Finance Committee. A letter from Mr W. Barnett and others re Third street was referred to the Public Works Committee. The Council then adjournod for half-an-hour, Crs. Nicholson and Ziegler being deputed to wait upon the Town Clerk with reference to leave of absence. After resuming, it was resolved that the question of temporarily filling the office of Town Clerk be'left in the hands of the Finance Committee, with power to act. The Council then adjourned till Tuesday, 13th inst., at 3 p.m. The adjourned meeting of the Council was held on Tuesday afternoon, 13th inst. • present His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Nicholson, Anderson, Olden, and Maloney. The minutes of previous two ordinary and two special meetings were read and confirmed. The inward correspondence was re ceived and considered. A letter was received from the Hokitika High School Board, calling the attention of the Council to section 3 of the Hokitika High School Act, 1883, requiring the Borough Council of Kutnara to nominate and appoint some one person as a member of the Hokitika High School Board; such nomination and appointment having to take place during the month of January in each year. It was resolved that the Town Clerk write to Dr. Giles, asking him to consent to be reappointed as a member of the Hokitika High School Board. The deputation appointed by the Council reported having waited upon Mr Skilton, the Town Clerk, who was unable to attend to his duties, and recommended that Mr G. R. Rudkin be asked to act in his place. The Finance Committee having also taken the matter into consideration, recommended that Mr Rudkin be appointed to act until further notice. By leave, the Mayor moved, Cr. Nicholson seconded, and it was resolved—That Mr G. R. Rudkin be appointed Acting Town Clerk and Treasurer uutil further notice.
Authority was also given to the Acting Town Clerk to sign chequeß. On the inotiou of the Mayor seconded by Or. Nicholson, Mr Rudkin was appointed to act as Borough Valuer, in place of Me Skilton, who was unable to attend to his duties.
The Finance Committee's Report was then brought up. It recommended the payment of the half-yearly subsidy of £25 to the Fire Brigade, and .sundry accounts, amounting in the whole to £79 19s 2d.—The report was adopted, and the various accounts were passed for payment. This concluded the business.
