Owing to pressure of other matter we are compelled to hold oyer correspondence and general news.
We regret to learn that the Loopline Kapitea dam is proving troublesome by reason of the old leakage enlarging again. Mr Gow was on his way to Kumara in the coach last evening, and when passing the Loopline road, he learned that there was something wrong, and at once hastened to the dam, and raised the gate as high as possible to let the water off, subsequently applying sandbags to stop the leak. For awhile it was feared that serious consequences would ensue; but to-day, owing to the precautions taken, it is hoped the difficulty will be got over before further damage is done.
The installation of IVIr Henry Burger as Mayor of Kumara took place at the annual meeting of the Borough Council at noon to-day. The ordinary business, which should have been dealt with last Thursday, but could not be for want of a quorum, was deferred till to-morrow night.
Commander Edwin wired at 12.15 p.m. to-day “Bad weather may be expected between north and east and south-east within 12 hours, and heavy rainfall after that time ; glass fall soon.”
The coach which left here yesterday had not arrived at the Bealey at nine o’clock this morning ; and at ten o’clock the Springfield coach started westward to meet it.
