The Returning Officer (A. F. F. Etheridge, Esq.) to-day announces that the following gentlemen are duly elected members of the County Council of West-

land :—For the Arahura Riding, Messrs Dungan, M‘Whirter, and Seddon; for the Kanieri Riding, Messrs Spence and Clarke ; for the Okarito Riding, Mr James M‘Goldrick ; for the Jackson’s Bay Riding, Mr M‘L. W. Jack. The Grey County Council elections all take place to-morrow. Messrs H. R. Rae and John Tait are candidates for the Mayoralty of Hokitika. The election takes place on the 26th inst., the same day as the Kumara mayoral election.

The nominations for the office of Mayor of Greymouth were made yesterday. Mr F. C. Dnpr4 was nominated by Messrs James Barkley and John M'Davitt, and Mr J. G. Thomas was nominated by Dr. Morice and Mr S. Rolleston. The election takes place this day week. Commander Edwin wired at 12.27 p.m. to-day:—“Same indications as wired yesterday ; glass further fall.” The usual fortnightly meeting of the Hospital Committee takes place this evening.

We have to acknowledge receipt from the publisher (Mr George Jeffery, Lawrence, Otago) of a new edition of the music and words of the National Anthem “God Defend New Zealand.” It is printed in Dunedin, and compares most favourably with the former edition, which was executed at the establishment of Messrs Hopwood and Crew, New Bond street, London; indeed Mr George, the Dunedin lithographer, may be said to have eclipsed the London artist in the production of the frontispiece, which, in addition to a good likeness of Mr Bracken, the author of the words, has also a likeness of Mr Woods, the composer of the prize music, lithographed thereon. The music is also printed in the highest style of art; and not the least interesting feature of the new edition is the introduction of a translation of the anthem into the Maori language, syllabically arranged like the English words, under the respective notes. One of the latest numbers to hand of the London Athenaeum (says a contemporary) contains a favourable review of Mr Thomas Bracken’s new work “Lays of the Land of the Maori and Moa. ” The Rev. Rutherford Waddell, who contributed the introduction to the book is handled somewhat severely by the reviewer, who asserts that the rev. gentleman has selected the least meritorious of the poems for commendation, while overlooking those which bear the stamp of excellence. A long extract from “ The March of Te Ruaparaha ” is quoted with approval, and regret is expressed that a man who could write such poetry should not have given his readers more verse of equal merit. The Dillman’s Town Quadrille Assembly will hold their usual meeting to-morrow (Wednesday) evening. As this will be the last of the present season a goodly attendance may be expected.

A quadrille assembly will be held at the Theatre Royal to-morrow evening, at 8 o’clock.

The Riverton paper says two fish have been caught in Jacob’s river, which experts pronounce to be real salmon.

The Tichborne claimant, who was released on the 20th ult., still asserts that William Creswell, who is confined at Parramatta Lunatic Asylum, N.S.W., is Arthur Orton.
