Cablegrams to-day state that the House of Lords has rejected, by a majority of fifty votes, Lord Wcroyss’s motion for obviating the dead-lock between the Government and the House of Lords on the Franchise question. Much excitement prevails in political circles in consequence of this note, and both Liberals and Conservatives are actively engaged in organising popular demonstrations throughout the country. —The news published by the London Times that the Chinese Government have refused to pay the indemnity demanded by France on account of the Langson affair, proves to be substantially correct; the Chinese having up to the present time shown no intention of accepting the terms dictated by France.—Another battalion of British troops has been ordered to proceed to Egypt, with a view of checking the advance of the Mahdi followers towards Egypt Proper, or Lower Egypt.—The shipwrecked crew of the steamship Ni.sero, numbering 25, who have been held in bondage since November last by the insurgent Rajah of Acheen, in Sumatra, being still retained, the British and Dutch Governments have agreed to take joint action with the view of obtaining their release.
