Christchurch, July 14. A meeting of the unemployed was held last night at tha Drill Shed, where the Mayor and Messrs Holmes, Joynt, and Blevois delivered addresses. A telegram from Government was read offering employment to 30 men trenching at Rolleston. The men are to be taken by early traiu and return at night, so as to avoid the necessity for living away from their homes; the wages to be 4s 6d per day. The meeting decided to petition for 5s 6d per day. Several of the unemployed have accepted Government's latest offer of 4s 6d a day along the railway, together with free conveyance by train to and from Christchurch every day.

Timaru, July 15. A five occurred a little before eight o'clock this morning, at the Education Board's book depot, Government buildings. Everything was destroyed, and uninsured.
