LATEST BRITISH AND FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE.

[REUTER’S TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.

BANQUET TO THE MARQUIS OF NORMANBY.

THE REJECTION OF THE FRANCHISE BILL. GLADSTONE SUMMONING THE LIBERAL MEMBERS.

(Received July 11, 0.58 a.m.) London, July 10, The Marquis of Normanby was entertained last night at a banquet by the leading Australians of London. Among the guests were Lord Kimberley, the Marquis of Lome, and Sir Michael Hicks-Beacb. In responding to the toast of bis health, the Marquis of Normanby took occasion to deny that the Victorians were guilty of lavish expenditure of borrowed money. In reference to the Recidiviste question he urged the colonists to await with patience the action of the Imperial Government.

Gladstone summoned a meeting of the members of the Liberal party for to-day to consider the position of Government in reference to its defeat in the House of Lords on the Franchise Bill, and to decide upon a course of action in connection with the same.

(Received July 11, 12.30 p.m.) Evening. Gladstone will, in the House of Commons to-day, make a statement as to the intentions of Government in view of the rejection of the Franchise Bill by the House of Lords.

The belief is generally current and hourly being strengthened that Government have decided to introduce the measure afresh at a special session to be held in the autumn.
