LICENSING COURT, KUMARA.

The postponed annual licensing meeting for the Licensing District of the Borough of Kumara was held in the Court House to-day, at noon. The five gentlemen constituting the Licensing Committee were present, viz., Mr W.. Nicholson (Chairman), Messrs J. O’Hagan, M. Maloney, H. Burger, and J. Hannah.

Sergeant Russell appeared to note the applications.

William T. Hanna, who had given in an application for a license for a house in Seddon street, formerly known as the Victorian Hotel, applied to withdraw the application, which was assented to by the Bench. The following applications for licenses were then considered and granted:—

B. J. O’Rourke, Post Office Hotel : 10 o’clock.

W. J. MTlroy, bottle license, £4O. 0. W. Anderson, Theatre Royal Hotel; 12 o’clock. B. Bremond, Bremond’s Hotel; 10 o’clock. To be kept cleaner and in better repair. Michael Dracatos, Republic Hotel; 12 o’clock.

H. Fitzsimons, Dundalk Hotel; 10 o’clock.

Jeremiah Gilbert, Sluicer’s Arms; 10 o’clock. Name to be painted on door.

The Chairman said there were some hotels which still retained the names of the former licensee and house. It would be necessary to make these alterations in order to comply with the Act; and the police would see to these alterations being effected, Bridget Mary Harrison, Shamrock Hotel; 10 o’clock. Ellen Hayes, Slattery’s Hotel; 10 o’clock.

James Horne, National Hotel; 12 o’clock.

Mary Kean, Adelphi Hotel; 10 o’clock.

Margaret Kettles, Bank Hotel; 10 o’clock.

W. Killeen, Tramway Hotel; 10 o’clock.

J. Mulvihill, Court-house Hotel; 10 o’clock.

J. S. Pearn, Buck’s Head Hotel; 12 o’clock.

James Preston, Criterion Hotel; 11 o’clock.

Mary Ann Ritaon, Grey mouth Hotel; 12 o’clock.

James Rugg, Kumara Hotel.—License granted to Mr Rugg, with permission for Mrs Rugg to carry on the business, The Chairman stated that tliis license could only be granted for six mouths ; and if at the end of that time it was required, it might be renewed. 12 o’clock. '

N. Seddon, Queen’s Hoeel; 11 o’clock.

Jean Spindeler, Crown Hotel; 12 o’clock.

Gilbert Stewart, Gilbert Stewart’s Hotel; 12 o’clock. Francis Upham, Morning Star Hotel. Permission given to Mrs Upham, same as in Rugg’s case, to carry on business for six months; applicant to apply again at the end of six months, if required.

Thomas Wilkinson, European Hotel. Police reported three looms of this house badly required papering; applicant had promised to have it done. The Chairman said the repairs mnst he effected within three months; license granted on these conditions. 10 o’clock.

Louis Ziegler, Empire Hotel; 12 o’clock.

For 12 o’clock licenses the fee is £SO) for 11 o’clock, £45) and for 10 o’clock, £4O. Bottle licenses, £4O. The Chairman said the Commitee wished it to be distinctly understood that no extension of time would be granted to publicans at Christmas time; such a practice was unfair to those who took

out 12 o’clock licenses. If any publicans wished it they could have their applications extended at the quaiterly meetings. J

Sergeant Russell stated that some publicans had been asking the Committee for extension of time for theatrical performances and dancing. He understood they could not apply for extension of time except at the quarterly meetings. 1 J The Chairman said that such extensions would not be granted except for charitable purposes. This concluded the public business. Several accounts were submitted, and passed for payment, and the Committee then adjourned.
