Five packages containing dynamite have been discovered in a tunnel near Easton Square Railway Station. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales was about to travel northwards by the London and North Western line. The discovery was made prior to his departure. It is believed that it was intended to wreck the train by which the Prince proposed to travel, and it is thought that the projected outrage is the work of Fenian emissaries; but up to the present time no arrests have been made by the police. The discovery has caused much excitement and indignation. (Received January 23, 1.25 p.m.) Tenders for the Victorian loan of four millions sterling at four per cent, and par minimum were opened to-day. The total amount offered was found to be £5,550,000. Tenders at £IOO Is 6d will receive 9 per cent,, and above that price in full. The death is announced to-day of Earl Grosvenor, heir to the dakedom of Westminster, aged 31. The English, Scottish, and Australian Chartered Bank has declared a dividend at the rate of ten per cent, per annum, and places 14 per cent, to reserve. (Received January 23, 1.10 a. m.) Cairo, January 21. News to hand from Soudan states that Baker Pasha since his arrival has been parleying with the Sheikhs of the desert and Arab tribes, and with considerable success, several of them who have been in the rebellion having submitted to the Egyptian Government. London, January 17. The premises of Messrs Silver and Company, army, navy and colonial agents, Sun Court, Cornhill, have been completely destroyed by fire. Twentyfive engines were working at the fire. Portions of the adjacent buildings, occupied by the Commercial Bank of Australia and by H. S. King, East Indian and Colonial agent and manufacturing stationer, were also damaged by the fire. The total damage done is estimated at £35,000, and is fully covered bg insurance.
January 18. A quarter of a million of gold has been withdrawn from the Bank of England for export to Australia. The Daily News states that this sum is desired to strengthen the reserve of the Australian Banks. The latest information from Cairo states that Baker Pasha is unable to relieve the troops at Sinkah, a town threatened by the followers of El Mahdi.
Several other garrisons are reported to be surrounded by the rebels.
The merchants in the Sondan are appealing to France for assistance in consequence of the threatened attack on Khartoum by the false prophet. A large number of the civilians are leaving that town.
