The custom of “ choosing a valentine ” is a very ancient one ; but in the present day the comic element is largely infused, no doubt with much of the sentimental object, i.e,, in quickening the young to action. Parker 33 A fatal accident occurred in the Inangahua last Friday afternoon about halfpast three o’clock, resulting in the death by drowning of Mr Hill Hamilton, an old settler, who in partnership with Mr Neill M'Connechie, farmed some land about two miles above Crushington. The Argus reports :—“ It appears that the deceased crossed the river for the purpose of borrowing a saddle from Mr Sunderland, a a neighboring settler, and during his short absence the river had risen considerably. Mr M‘Connechie went to the river bank, and on the return of Hamilton called out to him not to attempt the ford, as the river was dangerously high. Unfortunately Hamilton decided to make the attempt, and had no sooner headed his horse at the ford when it plunged into deep water and the rider was washed off. M'Connechie followed down the opposite bank, but Hamilton went quickly out of sight and never rose again to the surface. The horse gained the bank without difficulty. M'Connechie came into town immediately and gave information of the occurrence. The river banks will be searched in order to recover the body. The deceased, who is an old miner, is very well known throughout the Coast, and was universally respected.” The reading matter of the Grey River Argus appears from yesterday all in new type (Bourgeois).
