Dunedin, January 17
In Alexandra South, in central Otago, the heat was 146 degrees in the sun at half-past eleven to-day. This is the hottest ever experienced. We are having remarkable warm weather also in Dunedin.
Several of the gentlemen members of the Hon. Ivo Bligh's team intend visiting New ZepJand. David Thompson, the engine driver, who met with an accident yesterday, has recovered consciousne.-s and is progressing favorably.
January 18. A splendid harvest is anticipated Cutting has begun in the north.
After hearing the evidence of several witnesses in Massey's case, it was further adjourned for a week. Wellington, January 13.
Private infoamation received from Collingwood states that the Golden Ridge claim had cleaned up—the result being 1620 z. of retorted gold from 70
tons, a dividend of 6d per share had been declared. The mine is reported to be looking well. Invercargill, January 17. The body of a man named, John Dale was found in the Mataura river to-day. Deceased, who bad been drinking for some time, was in receipt of remittances from Home. The body bore marks of violence, which the doctor thinks were inflicted before death.
Auckland, January 18. In the Supreme Court to-day true bills were returned against Mrs Hamilton and Priestly for murder; George Olsen, for attempted murder; Peter Gillon, for stealing from a dwelling, and James Kay, for burglary. Webb, who was indicted for .stealing from a dwelling, was found not guilty and discharged. Henry Mason, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for burglary.
Timaru, January 17. The heat during this morning and afternoon has been most intense. The thermometer at one time registered 150 degrees in the sun ; several cases of sunstroke are reported, one being fatal. In one case a man named Sullivan, belonging to Oamaru was strickfin down in the harvest field at Makikihi. He was brought into town by the train and conveyed to the hospital, where he is in an unconscious state. In a second case, a young msn named David Hutcheson working in a field at Tiko flat was struck and died in a few minutes. A number of milder cases are also reported. An old man named " Yankee Sam," fell into a fire at Waihi bush to day and was seriously burned. His life is considered in danger. January 18. James Sullivan, who received sunstroke at Otaio yesterday, died in the hospital last night.
