Bv Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LATEST FOREIGN NEWS. BATTLE BETWEEN SOUDAN REBELS AND EGYPTIAN TROOPS. (Received January 19, 12.30 p.m.) Alexandria, January 17. Intelligence is to hand from rfoudan that an engagement has been fought between a battalion of Egyptian troops and the rebels under El Mahdi, the false prophet. The latter were victorious, and inflicted a severe defeat on the troops, a whole battalion of the latter being virtually destroyed, fully one half being killed and the rest placed hora de combat.
ALLEGED DISCOVERY OF GOLD STOLEN FROM THE TARARUA. THE VACANT SEAT FOR EAST SYDNEY. (Received January 19, 1.5 a.m.) Adelaide, January 18. The police have discovered a quantity of gold amounting to 276 ounces, which it is alleged formed part of. the bullion stolen from the ill-fated Union Company's steamship Tararua some time before the loss of that vessel. It appears that a man named Hunter, who was formerly steward on board the Tararua, died on Sunday last, and before his deatli he requested his friends to forward to his brother in San Francisco a box, the contents of which he kept secret. Suspicion was aroused, and, the box being opened, was found to contain gold, and information was given to the police. (Received January 19.) Sydney, January 18.
Sailed, this afternoon, the Union Company's steamship Manapouri, for Auckland. Mr H. Copeland, Minister for Public Works, who was recently defeated at Newtown, offered himself as a candidate for East Sydney, a vacancy having occurred in the representation of that constituency by the resignation of Mr M'Uhone, who takes his seat as a member for the Upper Hunter. Dr. Renwick, late Secretary for Mines, opposes the election of Mr Copeland for East Sydney. Heavy raius have fallen during the the last 24 hours throughout the Colony. Mr G. F. Vernon will not play for the English team in the international match commencing to-day. The bakers' dispute has been settled, and the men have decided not to strike.
