THREATENING ATTITUDE OF THE

NATIVES AT PARIHAKA. FIVE HUNDRED ENGAGED IN FENCING. RETURN OF WEST COAST MEMBERS. [special to kumara times.] Wellington, September 23. Great excitement prevails at Parihaka. Five hundred Maories are euengaged fencing, and they are very defiant. The Armed Constabulary are completing redoubts, and are ordered to be in readiness. The arrival of the Native Minister will determine either to attack them or to leave Te Whiti master of the situation.

Christchurch, September 24. Messrs Reid, Seddon, and Fisher, M.H.Rs., arrived by tbe Union Company’s s.s. Wanaka this morning. They leave for the West Coast by Tuesday’s coach.

A sad accident occurred on the tram to-day, A lad named William Power, about nine years of age, sou of William Power, tailor, was riding on .the tram, and it is supposed that, while attempting to alight, he slipped and fell under the wheel. He was immediately removed to the Hospital, where it was found 1 necessary to amputate his left arm and a finger of the right hand. The lad had his wrist broken and also bis leg above tbe ancle, besides other injuries to bis head. He is in a critical condition.

Dunedin, September 22. The race horse Atlantic has been sold by M. Hitching for 200 guineas. Auckland, September 23. The Albion passengers and crew were vaccinated before leaving Sydney. Having three doctors on board, their services were brought into requisition, and the usual investigation of-arms was gone into. The result was satisfactory. She landed passengers and cargo, and the mails were sent to Motuihi and fumigated.
