An ordinary meeting of the Borough Council- was held at the Town Hall, last evening •• present—his Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Councillors Hanna, Fitzsimons,, Pearn, Seddon and Pollock. Messrs O'Hagan and Campbell, the newlyelected Councillors, made the usual declaration, and took their seats. A letter was received from' Mr Clarke, aakiny. the
Council to recommend to the Waste Lands Board the sale of certain suctions in Main street; but, after a slight discussion, the Council declined to make the recommendation. Accounts for the amount of £l5B 7s 7d were passed for payment. A committee, consisting of the Mayor, Councillors Campbell, Pearn, and O'Hagan were appointed to draw up' a petition to bo presented to Parliament with the signatures in favor of the deviation of the Hokitika and Greymouth railway. The council then adjourned. B. Masters, Esq.,- M.H.R., and Dr. Huxtable were passengers by the Christchurch coach this" morning en route for Wellington". An unfortunate accident happeriect to a Mrs Slater, of Dilltnan's, on Monday, by which she not only lost all her bedding and clothing, but her hands were' also severely burnt. It appears that a spark from the fire fell on some clothes which were drying in front of it, ignited them, and before Mrs Slater could extinguish the flames they were all destroyed. As Mrs Slater' has' a large family to provide for, and the accident has debarred.her for the present from earning her livelihood by washing, as heretofore,- a subscription is now being, raised on her behalf, to which we feel assured many will contribute when they are aware of the painful facts of the case. The following are the names, so far as ascertained, of the unfortunate victims of the late fire in Dunedin, with special details regarding them : Robert Wilson, aged 59 ; Sarah Wilson, aged 40 ; Fredcrick Wilson, aged 10 ; Sarah Wilson, S ; Lawrence Oliphant- .Wilson, 4 ; Margaret M'Carthey, aged 19; George Augustus Martin, aged 23 ; John Taylor, aged about 20 ; together -with the bodies of a man unidentified, of the supposed name of Swan, and a man, woman, and boy not known. It will be seen from our telegrams receive'd this afternoon that Waters, the Cafe proprietor, has been committed for trial for " Incendiarism " a"nd u Wilful murder." The following (says the Cl Otago Daily Times") is a copy of Mr Macandrew's telegram to Mr Richard Reeves, relating to the West Coast railway. The date is 27th August. It will be seen that it is much more cautiously worded than Sir George Grey's recent utterances on the subject:—" There are, as yon know, several different lines proposed between East and West Coasts. It is manifestly impossible for me to decide right off the reel which of those lines should be made. It is sufficient, surely, to know that the Legislature lias decided to connect the two ccasts-, and that this is to be clone partly out of present loan, and partly out of proceeds of land sales. I presume that whatever Government may be in power must carry out what the Parliament has already determined.—J. Macaxdrew." While'the question of over-working the Hinemoa for private electioneering purpose's is being discussed, the following paragraph taken from the Wellington Chronicle, one of the most rapid supporters of Greyism, is worth nothing, as showing what has been taken out of her : —■" Sir George Grey arrived in Wei-, lington yesterday by the Hinemoa, which accomplished the passage from the Manukau in 27J- hours, the fastest on record. The Premier leaves to-day for' Lyttelton by the same steamer, to continue his election campaign at Christchurch."
