Mrs Phillips' Arson case is adjourned till to-morrow. Alphonso Ritsh ha 3 been committed for trial for perjury in connection with the case in which his sister Mrs Phillips was tried for arson. June 14. It is understood that Mr Stout retires shortly from the Ministry, in conseqneuee of urgent demands in his private affairs. Mrs Phillips, charged with arson a second time is committed for trial. Christchurch, June 13. J. 0. Boddington, manager of trm Bank of New Zealand, Lyttelton, wa this afternoon, presented with a testimonial on the occasion of his leaving that town. The present was a black marble-clock. A young woman, whose husband had deserted her and sailed for England, threw herself into the river today, The water was shallow, and she was dragged out without difficulty. oamaru, June 12. Alfred Hoskins, a bailiff, who stole portions of the property in which he was put in possession, has been sentenced to two mouths' imprisonment. A considerable additirn has been made to the Order of the Good Templars, consequent on the visit of the officers of the Grand Lodge. Two men named Moore and Wardman are supposed to be drowned. They were out fishing, when the boat was seen to disappear and the wreckage washed up on the beach. Timaru, June 12. Jonathan Alpress obtained £IOO out of £IOOO, damages claimed for malicious prosecution against R. Rogers for embezzlement.
Dunedin, June 11. The Otago Daily Times reccommends a firm attitude towards the natives, and expresses an opinion that Sir George Grey and Mr Sheehan are able to cope with the present difficulty. June 12. The total amount collected for the Kaitangata Relief Fund is upwards of £15,000 : of this amount £I,OOO was collected by Otago alone. Brother John Hyde Harris, Right Worshipful District Grand Master for the Province of Otago and Southland, E.C., has iutimated to the various Lodgea under his jurisdiction his desire that the members should wear Masonic mourning for a period of three months, out of respect to the memory of the late Brother John Lazar, D.G.M. for the Province of Westland, and late Deputy D.G.M. for this Province. Invercargill, June 12, Allen Charles Young was sentenced to live years' imprisonment for embezzlement. Patrick Kenny, who pleaded guilty to attempted rape on a girl named Minnie Atkinson, and pleaded drunkenness as an excuse, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and to receive 25 lashes on 7tb July. Wellington, June 12. Mrs Abraham Phillips, who was recently discharged on evidence of an alibi, was again arrested to-day on the charge of having wilfully set fire to her house at Kaiwarra. Her brother, Alphonso Rush, who was one of the witnesses on whose evidence she was discharged, has also been arrssted for perjury. The father mother, and sister all swore to her being at the Taitai when the fire occurred at Kaiwarra. The police think they have now sufficient evidence to disprove this. Auckland, June 12. The boy Walker, who was shot in the abdomen, died this morning. Gold-bearing quartz has been discovered on the Crown lands at Pahiu. The quartz was of a bluish color, similar to that taken from the Golden Crown and Caledonian mines. The land has been withdrawn from sale. Fourteen pounds of quartz were crushed and a nugget the size of a pea extracted. Coal has been found at Whangaroa. The premises of Charles Burtou,
pastrycook, Queen street, had a narrow escape from fire, but it was extinguished before any injury was done. 4 Major Keddel, R.M\ for Coronmndel, has been appointed to Clyde.
