Lord Chelmsford's camp at Gurgelova, was repeatedly attacked by about 11,000 Zulus at daybreak on the 3rd of April. The enemy, however was repulsed with heavy loss. Lord Chelmsford relieved Ekowe on the night of the 4th. The total British loss amounted to 222 men. Ekowe has been, evacuated, and Colonel Pearson is returning to the Fugela. The Boers are threatning to invest Pretoria, and retain Governor Sir Battle Frere unless their demands are granted. [SPECIAL.] London, April 22. Cape news has been received to the effi-ct that Colonel Wood has met and defeated the enemy in force. The loss of life amongst the Zulus was enormous ; the British only lost 400, and enemy upwards of 3000. An insurrection has broken out in Trausvaal, where the Boers strongly resent, and are determined to resist, Chelmsford's order for them to take part in active service. Sir Bartle Frere proceded to Pretoria to try and pacify them, but they have invested the town, and declare they will hold it and keep Governor Frere a prisoner until the British Government grants them redress of their grievances. A number of Chinese applied and have had their names placed on the electoral roll to-day, and were admitted. [special.] Sydney, April 24. The strike at the Exhibition is extending. There are now 400 on strike.
