Mercury at its Brightest
WELLINGTON, Sept. 21.
Two moderately bright objects seen in the sky last evening occasioned considerable interest in Wellington. The brighter one was the planet Mercury and the fainter one the star Spica. “At present Mercury is in the best position for being seen and .will be at its best perhaps on September 25,” said the director of the Carter Observatory, Mr I. L. Thomson to-day. “The planet is very seicrom. seen, due to its close proximity to the sun, and many famous astronomers claim that due to this fact, they have never seen it Now, therefore, is a very favourable opportunity. Last Friday night we looked at Mercury through the telescope and will do so again at the observatory this Friday, if conditions are favourable.”
