Motorists Support Present Petrol Seiling Method
CHRISTCHURCH. Februarv 3. The executive of th» South Island Motor Union last evening expressed general satisfaction with the present system of petrol allocation. " Although there was disapnroval of some cases of maldistrioution. “we cannot comnlain; the situation is reasonable in the emergency which exists at. the present time”, said the chairman (Mr W. R. Carey). Some resellers were operating the scheme satisfactorily, said Mr G. W. Ferens (Dunedin), but others were “soft” and allowed motorists to “put it across them”. “The only control I am going to suggest is the controlled allocation to netrol resellers”, said Mr Ferens. Some concerns had increased their turnover fivefold in the last two years. Others had some of their quotas left at the end of the month. This should go back into a pool. “We all have to play tlm game”, said Mr F. W. Freeman. “There arc lots of instances of peoole filling their tanks, siphoning out the netrol, and coming back for more. That is not playing the game”. The chairman and the secretary (Mr P. Harvey) were instructed to approach the union’s liaison officer in Wellington, asking him to recommend to the chairman of the Aid-for-Bri-tain Council that a committee or tribunal be set up io consider more equitable petrol distribution to resellers.
