GAOLED FOR BETTING WITH BOOKMAKER

WHANGAREI, Feb. 3. Eleven days’ imprisonment was imposed by Mr W. C. Harley, S.M. on John Maxwell Massey, a school caretaker, at Waipu, who was charged with having made a bet with a bookmaker. Detective-Sergeant Finlay said he had visited Massey's home where he found a record book showing the accused had laid 17 hets with a bookmaker on his own behalf and seven on behalf of friends. He was married with six children. He had no previous convictions. A security for appeal was granted in the maximum of £5
