MAORI WOMAN WINS DAMAGES FOR LIBEL ON THE CINEMA

P.A. GISBORNE, January 29. A Maori woman, Annie Tautau, in the Magistrate’s Court, was awarded £lO damages and costs against Edward Krause, Peta Mua, and Rangi Mua, in respect of a libellous statement published b.v the defendants on the screen at a picture theatre at Tekaraka on July 30, 1947. The claim was for £5O. The statement complained of stated that, if the plaintiff, and others, did not cease spreading scandalous rumours about a girl, they would be prosecuted, and it was signed by Rangi and Peta Mua. Air E. L. Walton, S.M., held that the occasion was not a privileged one, and that the plaintiff was, therefore, entitled to damages awarded.
