An application to purchase certain sections in Greymouth, which \vas made at the last meeting of the Waste Lands Board, and which was postponed, for inquiry, is worthy of being prominently noticed, as an application the of which might possibly affect largely one way or the other the public interests. The application, and the temporary decision regarding it, are thus represented in one of the local reports :—" W. C. Roberts applied to purchase sections 220 to 227, town of Greymouth. Adjourned until the next sitting of the Board, in order that the District Engineer might "be referred to, to ascertain if these sections would be intersected by the protective works." The sections in questions, we understand, represent something like two acres of land situated to the sea-ward of Richmond Quay — between the more westerly occupied sections and the Lagoon. They also, it is said, by the gradual encroachments of the river, now command a considerable river frontage, ajid might- possibly become of necessity the site for the construction of part of the projected protective works. It is in consideration of that contingency, no doubt, that the Board have agreed to make inquiry, but other reasons for carefully considering the application will probably occur to the Borrd, or, if they do not, they might be suggested, and now is the time to do so. The question of public wharves, coal depots, and railway termini are not less intimately connected with that once worthless site than are the protectivs works.
