RUTHERGLEN DISTRICT.
[fbom our own correspondent.] November 26. Gradually the old gully is recovering its j wonted prosperity, and again claiming for itself the supremacy of a gold-producing district to the south of the Grey. For a time matters did not seem to flourish, and the population appeared to be decreasing, but as water was brought on the terrace a change soon took place, and it •was at once clear that everything would be soon right. In fact, from the appearance of things just now, there will soon be great alterations for the better. Abercrorabie and Co. have lately taken up a fresh claim on the terrace, near the old track to the Cement Lead, and so successful have they been with their prospects that they have named it the Shamrock and Thistle. Great rejoicings were held on the occasion, and all parties thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Another work has been commenced that bids fair to advance the prosperity of Kutherglen, for Hughes and Company have 'taken the necessary levels to convey water on to the farfamed Victoria or Deep Lead. This undertaking is looked ' on most favorably^ by parties that know the ground. Mining generally throughout tHe district is in a most healthy, state,, which cannot be otherwise with golden terraces and merry Christmas weather. ' The only drawback against the place is the present condition of the township, which arises more through the uncertainty where the township will be laid 'off than anything else, for all depends on the road that is expected to be made through it. That such a contingency will take place is only reasonable, for here is a fixed and thriving population which is being gradually increased thai will be entirely cut off from the means of getting their supplies in the course of a short time after the tram leases running. This is one of the most urgent works that will have to be undertaken, arid will prove of great practical utility to all parties, nor will the cost of its formation be very great, as it will ixaverse a pretty level country most of the way ; in fact, mainly follow the course of the tramway. It is only fair and proper, that the inhabitants of Rutherglen should have access to a public road. If it could be proved by statistics the amount of revenue that they have paid to the Government during the last eight years it would be found that they were justly, entitled to some consicferation. A yoad they want, and a road they are determined to have. Then a township will arise worthy of the district, and not till then, for who can be expected to build when it was uncertain where the road will be.
