The friends of Mr John Reid, who was formerly in the employ of Messrs Gibbs and; Clayton, Dunedin, will learn with regret of his death from an accident of a fearful character at San Francisco. The "Morning Gall" of that city describes the occurrence as follows : — " John Reid, a native of Scotland, who came here from New- Zealand only a few months ago, was injured with fatal severity on Wednesday last, at the works of the Pacific Cordage < Company, Clarke's Landing, Almeda County. He became entangled in a ' bale rope' then being manufactured, was dragged along the ground at immense velocity three or four hundred feet, and then was dashed against a post and only liberated by the rope breaking., Reid was rendered insensible. Several of his ribs were broken, and he was internally injured. Death resulted on Sunday. Since coming to California he had been in delicate health, aud was employed by th«t» .manager of the works to some extent on 'charitable considerations. As soon aB he had, saved a little money, it was intention to return to New Zealand, where He has ]eft a .widow and family Jo lament his fate."
