The p.s. Wallace left for Hokitika on Saturday afternoon, and is expected, to return here to-day, -when she will take passengers for the North. " •:•■"'•• The schooner Sarah and Mary, with a cargo of produce from Lyttelton, was brought to the wharf by the p.s. Dispatch on Saturday. The missionary schooner ' Southern Cross has made her last voyage amongst the islands usually visited by the Melanesian Mission. The next voyage is to be made by the new auxiliary steamer, at present being built by Messrs Niccol and Son, North Shore, in about April next. Captain Jacobs, at present in charge of the Southern Cross is, we are glad to hear, to have command of the hew vessel. Mr Bougard (who is at present Capt. Jacob's chief officer) will be in the same capacity on the new steamer. We ("Hawke's Bay Herald") learn that Messrs Wa^t Brothers are getting a >teamer built at Taupo, for the purpose of running on the Lake. • The engines are to be finished by the 15th Decembe-, and it^s 'intended, to hive the steamer ready by, the beginning of January. Captain J, H. Blethen, well known as the commander of the San Francisco steamer Nevada, is one of the two persons nominated for the office of Harbor-master of i'-'an Francisco, and is stated by the newspapers of that city to be eminently qualified for that position. On a recent afternoon (the "Newcastle Chronicle" states) when the cattle were being shipped on hoard the brig Lily one beast managed, when let down on the deck, to get clear of the tackle and with one bound got right over the bulwarks oh the harbor side of the vessel, as if with a view of making for the North Shore Strange as it mayappear, this animal, which never saw deep water before, swam with the greatest ease. A boat was soon put put, and the beast was headed towards the southern breakwater, where it landed, when it was again got to join the rest of the herd, and eventually shipped in safety to make the voyage for New Caledonia.
