NOMINATION FOR NELSON SUPERINTENDENCY.
Nelson, Nov. 8. The nomination for the Superintendency took place to-day. Only Curtis and O'Conor were nominated. The proceed- ! ings lasted four hours. Mr Sclanders proposed, and Mr Wright | seconded Mr Curtis. Mr Percival proposed, and Mr Levin seconded Mr O'Conor. In the course of the speeches there was plenty of hard hitting on both sides. The show of hands was— Curtis, 72 ; O'Conor, 37. Auckland, Nov. 8. The Interprovincial Cricketers beat thirteen local players to-day. They go south by the Wellington on Monday. The latest returns give Williamson a majority of 54. The announcement of the Otago Insurance Company caused a fall of seven shillings in the National shares. Wangakui, Nov. 8. The Malay is aground in the river. She "got out of the channel. The Manawatu failed to get her off. In the award in the case of Watt v. Ballance, the arbitrators all concur in finding for the plaintiff with LSO damages and costs. Further, the arbitrators say that we have given damages to the above limited amount, because we are aware that costs will be heavy, and because we think that plaintiff's character having been vindicated from the charges contained in the libel, heavy damages need not be given. CHRIS3PCHORCH, Nov. 8. The Governor holds a levee of the Provincial Council on Tuesday. Wellington, Nov. 8. The Opposition party have defeated the Provincial Government on the Loan Appropriation Bill for Public Works, and have thrown out the Bill. There was a thin attendance of members ; majority three. Both the newspapers condemn the .action of the Opposition party as utterly factious, and further say if Wellington present another Loan Bill to the Assembly, ita chance of passing would be small indeed. Dunedin, Nov. 8. The man Diggs, who was assaulted with a spade by Kate M'Dnnald, died in the hospital last night from the effects of the injuries received. At a meeting of the Masonic Hall Company, held last night, it was resolved to wind up the company, the directors having disposed of the hall. The merchants and mercantile men have resolved to issue a fire and life assurance company in Otago, and branches throughout the Colony, with a capital of one million sterling, in 100,000 shares of LlO each. Fifty thousand shares to be issued immediately. (prom a correspondent.) Nelson, Nov. 8. Mr O'Conor made a violent attack on Mr Curtis, for favoritism in appointing Wardens Giles and Whitefoord, saying that at first they were most incompetent, and caused severe losses to miners, though they had since improved by experience. His speech generally was violent and calculated to injure his chances. A strong feeling is setting in against him.
