THE LYELL REEFS.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] October 13. The Little Wonder ; machine is at length completed, and was on Saturday; last formally christened by Mrs Carroll in the presence of a large and happy gathering of miners and visitors assembled to do honor on the occasion. The machine at present consists of five head of jScwt stampers driven by water power, but the wheel is powerful enough to drive fifteen head of stampers, and the battery ; will shortly be increased to that numberi iTbe machine commenced crushing operations this morning upon stone taken from"; the far famed Little Wonder leader, and; the proprietors intend keeping it fully [employed for some time. It is anticipated that the result of the present crushing will give a return of . at least ;soz to 'the ton, and, of course, much ; interest is felt in the result of the crushing. The shareholders in some of ' the surrounding claims, being unable to come to terms with Messrs' Carroll arid Cairns, held a meeting, at which it was decide^ to endeavor to lease the Alpine Company's machine. A deputation from the Lyell visited Westport, arid it is understood that they have obtained, the use of Jthe machine on certain terms, and we riiayshortly expect to see both, machines hard, at \vork. There is an immense quantity of rich stone to grass on the hill— sufficient to keep both machines going for one year. . Arrangements in connection with the crushing at the Alpine battery willjbe pushed on most vigorously, as the shareholders in the various claims are heartily sick and tired with the vexatious delays land disappointments they have hitherto been subjected to. - ! Mr Grove, a candidate for Provincial honors, addressed a meeting of the electors at the Lyell on Tuesday evening la^st, ' and was very coolly received, Mr Grqve read a long address, remarkable only |or the amount of virulentantipathy expressed towards many leading citizens of Nelsdn, and total absence of anything like common sense. He was not even patiently listen'ed to, and certainly had no right to expect it, as he betrayed unpardonable ignorance on, all matters connected with niinirg jor mining interests. Two other candidates are in the field, Messrs M 'lean and M'Gregor, and the result will lie betwefen these two gentleman. Mr O'Conor has also signified his intention of addressing us, on matters " anent the Superintendency " it is presnmed.
