Albion is due at this port early this morning, and, as the weather is more settled, it is fully expected that she will be tendered. Ther«.was a welcome reformation in the weather, yesterday, .but the late. gales have raiaa^ftflheavy sea . along the. coast, and at mos^p: the ; ports .there ib risk in .workiug the bajj/ Here the Charles Edward remains : in N harbor; the Kennedy in Westport,; the Murray continues in Hokitika ; and at the H.iast,it is understood that, while the Titan is a prisoner inside the bar, it was not deemed safe for the Waii»ara to steam in. The schooner Mavis, after loading with, timber at Hokitika, wilt sail to Melbourne, and then return direct to Charleston with a cargo of merchandise to the order of Messrs Gardner and Sutton. The as.' Go- Ahead, after discharging her freight of cattle at Wangariui without the loss of a single head, left again on Sunday morning direct for. ' The first pile for the new railway pier extension ,at ; .P,ort Chalmers was driven on, Saturday afternoon. , This extension will be 1000 ft' long,' arid have three lines of rails. ' " ' . : ' A Napier paper records the first Customs seizure under the new tariff as having been madethere of aportion of the Amherst's cargo, from Sydney, tothevalue of L3OO. Theseizure was made in consequence of the agent for the importer making a declaration of value founded 'on false' invoices. No other particulars are given. A somewhat similars seizure has, we believe, been made at Wanganui.T—Post, Sept. 23. r Mr Wilde, a British inventor, has patented a combination of apparatus, by which, the electric light can be employed to illuminate the path of sea-going steamers to light up the lines of ships or fortifications of an enemy. The principle of the apparatus is an electro or magnetic induction machine, which solves the problem of producing electricity at a con- . tinubu's rate and in uniform 'quantity, while! it neutralises the influence of ihe current. A. simple apparatus regulates the' carbons, and the light thus produced 'is intensified by passing through a tatadioptric holophote, which moves on pivots and condenses the rays, producing a far-reaching beam of great intensity. The British military authorities have directed,. a report to be made on the value' of the invention. , ! . .
