MARSDEN.

[prom our ottn correspondent.]

September 10. The New River Race Company have been engaged lately in turning the Maori Creek water into their race, which will be done by aid of a siphon under the bed of the New River, so that in the event of their dam, which is placed there, being washed away, the Maori Creek water wiS be always available. As soon as this work is completed, it is expected that they will be in a position in a very short time to supply water to parties at Brandy . Jack's and the upper part of the Limestone. As. ihis part has always been favorably spoken of, and some very nice patches taken out, it is thought that there will be a good few parties set in just there, particularly as the water will be let at a very reasonable rate. ■'■ ! : ■ ■ ■■'■■■ '■■■ ' •■■; '- : - ■ :'■?; .:■• It is not yet decided whether wooden fluming or iron pipes will bemused at the

gorge near Moa Flat. Inquiries are now being instituted as to the cost of the latter, which, if found at all reasonable compared with that of high fluming, will no doubt be adopted. The New River Race Company and the Hibernian Company had meetings of their shareholders at Marsden on Monday evening,, bat these were ultimately adjourned for a fortnight; I ; , The Paroa Road Board, it seems, are not going to be permitted to coUecktheir rate so easily as they imagined. For many months past it has been reported that a fund would be collected to test the validity of the rate unless it was strictly enforced' in conformity with the Act. It is said that the letter from the County Chairman authorised the Paroa Road Board to levy a general rate, which the ratepayers say has not been done, as the assessment has only been made on certain property, and not in accordance with "the Road Board Act. A general subscription is now being made, so that the best legal opinion; in .{Jreymouthj can be obtained as to the legality of the rate.. ; No doubt funds must be raised to carry out *he functions of the Road Board, but they must be raised in accordance with the law of the land; and it is not in the jurisdiction of any Board to alter or atiaend what has been lawfully enacted by the Legislative Assembly-Council and sanctioned by the Governor. There is the Act to go by, and they are bound to carry it 'Out. If the Paroa Road Board has d6he : 'so, they will be lawfully entitled to collect the present rate ; and if they have not, they will find that they have made a mxwt egregious mistake. ........ .;."■• \
