f ANGLO- AUSTRALIAN PRESS TELEGRAPH AGENCY.] NATIVES "TO THE FRONT." AGENT-GENERAL IN DEFIANCE. NEW PROVINCIAL LOANS. Wellington, Sept. 30. A meeting of Maori chiefs, fifty in number, from all parts of New Zealand, was held to-day. The Natives had assembled to watch the progress of Ministerial Native Measures in the House. The mpetiug passed resolutions unanimously condemning the Native Reserves Bill, the Native Councils Bill, and the new clauses in the Native Lands Bill. They pointed out that the Government had neglected to print the Native Bills in the Maori language, even for the use of the Maori members of the House, that no information had been given to the Maori people of any such organic changes in the administration of Native Lands, and that the Bill appears to give the Government monopoly of the land marketj and chiefs are determined to resist such an attempt. All present signed a petition to the House of Representatives., praying that the Bill be not allowed to become law. It is stated in well-informed circles that .if the Upper House throw out the Native Reserves Bill, the Premier will endeavor to prorogue Parliament, and call another session in a fortnight.
