Up to the present crushing operations at Anderson's give promise of. a much larger average yield at the next clearing up than was obtained from the previous six weeks' crushing. Accounts state that the amalgam lifted after two days' crushing exceeded in weight that previously obtained after the batteries had run six days. These are the words' in which the Auckland Herald commences some comment on a case which was lately triedthere. The Herald continues :— The decision ( tells us . "that if a man sells a lot twice he is guilty of, fraud.; but if he sells it and afterwards borrows money from some unsuspecting lender— whom he-tells, 'and' Mho believes that he is still the real, owner — he cannot be punished. The fraud, it is true, is as great in one case as in the other, and the punish-' ment equally deserving and as loudly called for by justice ; but the statute which pro? hibits a second conveyance does not, it appears, forbid the fraudulent raising of money by mortgages after ownership has ceased — consequently the criminal goes free. Let us prostrate ourselves in adoration of the statute which thus splits hairs aud cheats justice, and at the State throne of the Court which has the honor of expounding such a statute. ■■ t . Some months since, Captain Hill, of Rabi, Fiji, sent a number of stones, which he had picked up on one of his plantations at Rabi, to an eminent geologist in Sydney. By the last mail he has received a reply that one stone was jasper, one onyx, one cornelian, 1 and one copper ore, containing 35 per cent, copper. The Victorian Musicians' Co-operative Association has 159 members enrolled on its books. The Geelong Times reports that a suction fan has been invented for •■ventilating' mines. 1 It has been put' in practice with complete succesß at a mine, where ■it drew out the foul air at a distance of 1100 feet.
