YESTERDAY'S LUNCHEON.

, • , (to the editor.) : Sir— l found this afternoon that some of my friends,- with whom I had lunch at the Transit Shed this morning, are under the impression that the Committee who have 'had the trouble of getting up the demonstration of to-day, afterwards partook of a " champagne lunch" at the expense of the public. That is to say, that the subscriptions received for the purpose of celebrating the turning of the first sod of the Railway were partly devoted to the benefit of a select few. As it appears to me to be a pity that any misunderstanding should exist on thia subject, will you allow me to say that I and every member of the Committee have paid seven shillings and sixpence each for admittance to the luncheon at Gilmer's, and that the said luncheon was open to everyone on the same terms and notice thereof was given in the papers. The whole of the funds at the disposal of the Committee have been expended on the free lunch at the Transit Shed and the fete to the children in the Town Hall. This evening it is my intention to attend a public ball, for which I, in common with all the members of Committee, shall have to pay one guinea for a ticket. As I have an utter abhorrence of unnecessary class distinctions, I think it , right to make this statement. lam, &c, James Wylde, Hon. Sect to Committee.
