POSTAL RATES.

The postage rates on correspondence posted in New Zealand for the undermentioned places, 1 to be forwarded by the Pacific Mai) Route, will be as follows : —

An Italian- composer named Filoni has composed an opera, the scene of which is laid in Paradise. It should cost the director who mounts it little for costumes. A St. Petersburgh correspondent of an English paper says : — " There is much anxiety felt in Russia regarding the destruction of the forests, which proceeds very rapidly, and threatens to deprive the country of one of the most valuable of its export products—wood, namely, for building purposes — of which the superiority is generally recognised. In Russia itself it is very little used. Statistics show that in ;the province of Piotrkow, alone a third of the forests have been destroyed during a period of 20 years. The Minuter of Customs, M-. Walourew, has prepared a aeries of regulations to prevent the destruction; of iorests not only on the Crown lands,] but also on private property.
