■ .'■ We learn, from The Times that, on the recommendation of the Lords of ; the Admiralty, the silver medallion of -the .Royal Humane Society has been voted to SubLieutenant R. J. Wood, of her Majesty's ship Endymion, for trying to save John Butler, who fell overboard at Spithead, under tbe following circumstances : — Tbe Endymion, while on her way .to join the Flying Sduadron in the West Indies, was was obliged, from stress of weather, to return .: to Portsmouth, and while doing so, Buller, who was assisting to take in a second reef in the maintopsail, was struck by a block which had broken ; loose, , and was knocked off the yard into. ;the sea. ;: Lieutenant Wood, who was on duty at the time, observingth© accident, went to one. of . the quarter-deok ports,., and Nwithout divesting himself of any of : his clothing, at once plunged in after the unfortunate .man. A strong wind, was blowing; at the time, and the sea was rough, but the efforts of Mr Wood were of no avail, for tbe seaman never rose to the surface, owing, it is supposed, to His'bemg stunned by his head striking against the rigging in his fall.:. Meantime a lifebuoy had been thrown to Lieutenant Wood, which the gallant officer had some difficulty in reaching, owing to the heavy sea, and a boat from the vessel soor! after coming up, he was saved.
