The disastrous intelligence of the great calamity which has befallen the people of Westport will, we are confident, be received with regret and commisseration by the inhabitants of this district. The news contained in the published telegrams is sufficiently distressing, but the details of the ruin which' has fallen suddenly upon struggling families, which we learn from private sources, are pitiful. When a similar misfortune happened to our own community, the residents of Westport, in common with generous sympathisers throughout the Colony, came forward to our assistance and relief ; and it is now our opportunity to show our gratitude by at once and in a practical manner making an effort to alleviate, with material assistance, the distress, and we fear, the destitution which will be occasionsd to our neighbors by this terrible visitation of Providence.
